Launching Outlook at startup (in a smarter way)

I know many people start Outlook as the first application directly after they start their computer and close it as the last one when they shutdown.

You might already know that you can automatically start any application at startup by placing a shortcut to this application in the Startup folder in the Start Menu. This is a great way to save you a click and/or to ensure that you do not forget to start Outlook.

However, the problem with this method is that you are putting quite a bit of stress on your computer directly when you login and starting up your computer might actually take a lot longer as a result. Especially if you are also starting some other applications directly at logon, you could render your computer unresponsive for quite some time.

View today’s RSS feeds only

Sometimes it is hard to keep up with all the news I receive from all my RSS feeds (I've got quite a few subscriptions). I find myself cycling through all the folders to see if there is something new in there.

The blue Unread Items notification is not of much help as I don't read all the entries of each and every RSS feed.

Is there a way I can for instance just see today's RSS items that I haven't read?

Uninstall Outlook Microsoft 365 and Office 2013/2016/2019 Click-To-Run Updates

I wanted to uninstall an Outlook update but when I follow the instructions to uninstall the updates via Control Panel, I don’t see any Office updates listed there.

I’m using Office 365 Home Premium, which is updated automatically via the cloud and not Windows Update if I’m not mistaken.

Can I also uninstall updates then?

To-Do Bar Calendar functionality in Outlook 2013

I’ve pinned the new “Calendar Peek” to get the “To-Do Bar” back in Outlook 2013 but I’m still missing some functionality here.

The main options that I’m missing are:

  • It only shows appointments of the current day
  • Dates with appointments are no longer in bold
  • I can’t “stretch” the area to show more months (Date Navigators)
  • I can’t drag and drop emails or contact items onto dates in the Date Navigator to quickly schedule appointments.

Especially the first one is quite annoying. If I have a day with little or no appointments, I always found it quite convenient to see upcoming appointments for the next days. Now it just shows a big empty white spot.

Is there any way to change this and get that functionality back?

Forward, Reply All and Print in Outlook.com

When I use my Outlook.com account via the browser rather than in Outlook, I seem to miss some basic features or I simply can’t seem to find them.

For instance, how can I Forward a message or use Reply All?

Also, I can’t seem to find the Printing option. I’ve tried printing with the printing feature from my browser, but that looks very ugly as it simply prints the entire screen.

Where can I find these commands?

Contacts and Calendar from iCloud missing or not synching after upgrading to Windows 10 or Outlook 2016

I’m using iCloud with Outlook to synch my Contacts and Calendar with my iPhone and iPad. This all worked without any issues until I upgraded to Windows 10.

When I try to open my Contacts or Calendar folder, I now get the error:

The set of folders cannot be opened. The information store could not be opened.

I also no longer have the iCloud buttons on the Ribbon to Refresh, see any Notifications or Share Calendar.

How can I get iCloud to work again with Outlook on Windows 10?

Moving or making Automatic Replies (OOF) stand out more

With the holidays going on, and the fact that you only receive the Automatic Replies (Out of Office) notices once, I’d like to keep track of who is away when.

As most people tend to write their substitute or an emergency number in the Automatic Reply message as well, I thought storing them into a separate folder (or having them stand out more so I don’t forget to move them) would be a good approach. I can then simply search within that folder

How would I move or color code these Automatic Replies without risking to also move or color code other messages?
